And it all begins with a gnarled, ancient tree on a sunbaked slope…


The Oil & Vinegar story began in the Netherlands, where our first store was opened. From there, Oil & Vinegar has spread around the world – including, we’re happy to say, South Africa.


Olive oil has been described as the elixir of eternal youth. It’s a rich source of healthy fats, antioxidants and vitamin E. It’s been proven to help lower cholesterol, and can contribute to a reduced risk of cancer and heart disease. Some of the longest-lived populations in the world are found in olive-growing regions.


It takes around 5kg of olives to make a litre of olive oil, and each tree can produce enough olives in a year for between 3 and 10 litres of oil. After harvesting, the olives are pressed to extract the oil, water and any unwanted flavours are separated out, and the oil is filtered before being bottled. Only then can it begin its journey to your kitchen.


Extra virgin olive oil (or EVOO for short) is the best there is. It comes exclusively from the first pressing. This cold-pressed oil is the only kind that we sell here at Oil & Vinegar. Olive oil from different regions will have different flavours, so the only way to find your favourite, is to sample many!
